About Us

Carinn and Kate started this podcast to celebrate the proliferation of women in contemporary books, TV and movies. We were no longer only wives and daughters, but professionals, troublemakers, leads looking for love *and* success, women with contradictions and conflict. We were flight attendants, mothers, survivors, women with funny nicknames.

And yet even with the critical brilliance and commercial success of women in entertainment, Carinn listened to a two-hour analysis of Gone Girl, exalting Ben Affleck’s legacy and David Fincher’s genius (arguably fair and true). The problem was the discussion concluded with mere mentions of Gillian Flynn (who wrote the internationally best-selling novel and the Oscar nominated screenplay) and Rosamund Pike, the women who ARE the faces and voices of Gone Girl. Carinn experienced a rage she had never felt before, called up Kate, and Pop Fiction Women was born.

Our original PFW episodes involve looking at complicated protagonists, diagnosing mommy issues with our armchair psychology, and imagining a new future in our crystal ball before sharing the one vital nugget we learned in our takeaway segment.

We are also writers who consider authors, showrunners, and multi-hyphenate creators our celebrities. We do a deep dive on the women behind the scenes of every episode and gush about them. And on our Complicated Conversations series, we invite them to join in on the discussion so you can hear their inspiration and challenges first-hand.

Carinn and Kate both live in New York with a husband and two children each. We both went to Boston College and Fordham Law. Carinn is an Aries sun and Capricorn moon. Kate is a Leo sun with Libra rising. We really want to set fire to everything we do.

You can listen to Pop Fiction Women anywhere you enjoy your podcasts. We love to hear recommendations for future picks, positive feedback on what you’ve heard, and constructive criticism for what we can do better. We hope to hear from you!
